Commemorating the Past, Confronting the Present: Abolition of Slavery and the Fight Against Modern Forms

On May 10, the Africa Live as One Movement—a Pan-African youth-led initiative—hosted a powerful commemoration of the abolition of slavery alongside thought leaders Dr. Rusa and Muganga Rutangarwamaboko. While we honored the courage and resilience of those who fought for our freedom, we were also reminded that slavery has not entirely disappeared—it has evolved into new, hidden forms. This gathering was not just a reflection on history, but a renewed call to action. As young Africans, we remain committed to ending all modern forms of exploitation and ensuring that true freedom is lived, shared, and protected across our continent.
